A Technical History of the General Electric GE36 Propfan

The GE36 was an experimental ultra-high bypass unducted fan engine developed during the 1970s-1980s as a response to escalating fuel prices. General Electric / NASA used a unique gearless design with multiple swept carbon fiber fan blades to create and fly a demonstrator engine of unparalleled efficiency. The project was terminated by the stabilization of fuel costs, loss of public funding, and the yet-to-be addressed issues of weight, acquisition and maintenance costs, safety, noise, airframe integration, and overall acceptance by the flying public.
