Nicknamed "Little Charlemagne", Count Pierre II ordered the reinforcement of the defensive architecture of Chillon Castle. Originally destined for an ecclesiastical career as a canon of Lausanne Cathedral, he inherited the earldom on the death of his nephew. In this new role, he expanded the family territory phenomenally, through alliances and marriages. Peter II of Savoy also introduced innovative administrative practices.
