Group name: Cosmic Elaichi (group number 8) Group members: Varun Kushwaha, Bipradeep Saha, Nivedaa Dhandapani, Dhavala Sai Srinivas Abstract: In this video, we discussed the cosmological redshift, which relates to the distance to the source and the time in the universe's history. Upon this foundation, we dwell in understanding the spectra from a quasar that has this particular dense region of dark absorption lines for wavelengths smaller than the Lyman alpha line of the hydrogen spectrum. It appears like a forest, so we call it the Lyman alpha forest. We explained its origin in simple terms using some concepts from the radiative transfer theory and what observing such a spectrum implies for how the hydrogen in the universe is distributed. And also talked about how the Lyman alpha forest helps us mark the beginning of the reionization phase of the universe. The Lyman alpha forest is an active topic of research. It has many applications, and researchers are using machine learning and simulations to predict the thermodynamics of the early universe, estimate the neutral hydrogen fraction, understanding the large-scale structures, and even use it to constrain the hot and cold dark matter content in the universe.
