This research project aims to elucidate whether there is a relationship between animal cognition and motivation, specifically in the context of pigs in research. Pigs insufficiently engaged with a cognitive task might show a poor performance, despite their actual cognitive abilities. This can lead to the unnecessary exclusion of animals failing to reach the habituation or training criteria resulting in a reduction in the sample size and bias the sampling method (Biro & Dingemanse, 2009; Manning et al, 2021; Martina et al, 2021). Studies like this one may provide refining opportunities for future studies conducting cognitive tests in pigs. This video was created as a submission for the ASAB winter conference video competition on the topic “Animal Cognition: Pure to Applied”. It shows the research conducted for an MSc dissertation at the University of Edinburgh. This dissertation was a small part of a larger study that is still ongoing at the Institute of Genetics and Animal Biotechnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
