Biodiversity hotspots are areas that have a large variety of living things and are threatened by human activity. To count as a biodiversity hotspot, an area must have at least 1500 endemic species of plants, and must have lost at least 70% of its primary vegetation. Indo-Burma is one of these hotspots, and is over 2 million km² in size! There are over 7000 endemic plant species found in this region, meaning they can be found nowhere else on Earth. Indo-Burma boasts the highest diversity of freshwater turtles in the world, one fifth of all the world's species are found within its boundaries. The variety of life here is staggering, but also at great risk. 25 of this region's endemic species of mammals are threatened with extinction, as are 35 of the endemic amphibian species. At least 95% of the natural habitat in Indo-Burma has been lost to human development including agriculture and forestry. Luckily governments in the Indo-Burma region are working together to increase the degree of protection offered to areas of habitat found inside national parks and wildlife refuges. This investment will hopefully allow us to protect these important hotspots and ensure that the biodiversity that lives in these area will continue to have a home!
