On Wednesday 20th December 2017, I decided to venture out and capture the changing face of the Great Western Mainline during this interesting changeover period. The locations seen in this video are Twyford, Maidenhead, Iver, West Drayton and Ealing Broadway. The video sees a number of Class 165s/166s, most of which will move to the Bristol area in January, a Class 180, which will move to Grand Central following the withdrawal of the GWR fleet, HSTs, which will gradually disappear from the Thames Valley over the coming months as the new IETs take over their duties, and a Heathrow Connect Class 360, which will be replaced by the new Crossrail Class 345s in May 2018. A taste of the future is seen in the form of GWR Class 387s, which was still limited to Maidenhead - London Paddington duties at the time of the video, and IETs. Alongside the usual collection of Class 59/66/70-hauled freight trains we see DRS 57306 carrying a brace of Class 387s from Reading depot to West Ealing EMU sidings, a move which has now disappeared following electrification of the Maidenhead - Didcot Parkway section of the GWML. Also, we see Europhoenix 37884 dragging a new Class 387 from Bletchley to Reading depot. Enjoy this snapshot of the changing face of the GWML!
