The rumour started with Ukrainian member of parliament Oleksiy Goncharenko telegram post. He claimed that, the Russian frigate Admiral Makarov was hit by a Ukrainian Neptune missile. Some online posts said the warship sank into the Black Sea, making it the second major Russian warship lost in combat in recent weeks. Let’s have a look at what we know so far. The Russian authorities have not fully denied the incident, but the foreign spokesman insisted he does not have any information about this. It is worth noting he does not deny it immediately. An unconfirmed video from social media was believed by some people to be proof that the Russian frigate, the Admiral Makarov, was on fire at sea. Heavy smoke can be seen rising from the ship, but many point out this is likely from a computer game, not real footage. Some analysts use radar satellite image to find possible signature of such a major military incident, but so far no proof can be found. And some claimed that radar interference data can be detected in northern Black Sea, possibly originates from Dzhankoi Air Base in north of Crimea. The most interesting fact surrounding the mystery is that, multiple Russian rescue ships and aircraft are reportedly in the area, with U.S. surveillance drones keeping eyes on it. A Russian rescue ship labelled SPK-46150 was dispatched to the area, and a USAF RQ-4 Global Hawk drone has been flying around the spot. But some online sources rejected this and pointed out that US and NATO aircraft have been flying close to the warzone in Ukraine for weeks. That can be seen as proof that the Makarov has been hit or sunk in the sea. At this moment, I would say it is possible the frigate Makarov was hit or damaged in some way; it is also possible it has sunk, but there is no solid proof yet. The Ukrainian Neptune missiles are reported to be the main reason that the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva, was sunken. The frigate, the Admiral Makarov, is a newly built warship that entered service after the cold war. It would be devastating to the Russian war effort if it was lost at sea. Losing two of the largest Russian frontline combat warships in the Black Sea will cause a major impact to the Russian naval force in the area. This frigate has a comprehensive anti-missile defence system, but it is unknown if the systems were on duty when the possible attack happened, similar to the mystery of the Moskva being sunken by two medium-weight anti ship missiles. The frigate has 16 to 24 calibre cruise missiles, and 32 surface-to-air missiles, plus two Palash close in weapon systems and a 130 mm main gun to intercept missiles.
