Mattins of S. Stephen the Martyr The Canadian Book of Common Prayer (BCP) can be accessed here: https://prayerbook.ca/bcp-online/ According to ancient custom, the Mutual Salutation (V. The Lord be with you; R. And with thy spirit) was said only by clergy. With these words a deacon, priest, or bishop – together with the gathered congregation – expresses the desire for the Lord to be present in our prayers. This same desire is expressed by layfolk with the following prayer: V. O Lord, hear our prayer; R. And let our cry come unto thee. Trinity House Officiants who are not in holy orders will replace the Mutual Salutation with these prayers any time at which the Mutual Salutation would otherwise be said in the Office.
