Tickets on sale now at TheRestIsHistory.com ________ The Democratic National Convention is in Chicago, and the incumbent president, Lyndon B. Johnson, has pulled out of the race. Anti-war protestors are flooding the streets of the city, and Johnson continues to press on with the war in Vietnam. Bobby Kennedy’s assassination has turned the Democratic candidacy contest into a two-horse race between Hubert Humphrey and Eugene McCarthy. And while they’re battling inside the convention for delegates, the real fight is taking place on the streets. Dope-smoking youth activists known as the “Yippies” have called for a protest against the Vietnam War, and their threats made in the name of the ‘politics of play’ have been taken seriously by Chicago police, who react with brutal force. Flowers and poems meet truncheons and guns. As DNC votes are being counted, images of these confrontations are broadcasted on newsreels across the nation. Join Tom and Dominic to discuss a Democratic National Convention that saw Chicago descend into violence and chaos. Listen as they explore what led to one of the most anarchic political conventions, and how it impacted a divided America. ________ 00:00 Introducing the 68 convention in Chicago 04:10 The state of the Democratic Party 1968 06:23 Hubert Humphrey 07:59 Mayor Daley’s Chicago 11:30 Daley wants to draft president Johnson in 12:30 The peace groups 14:30 The YIPPYs 23:00 The YIPPYs try to outreach to African-Americans 24:08 The Prague Spring 24:45 The YIPPYs' demands 25:38 Who were the MOBE 26:12 The Chicago police’s point of view 32:25 They arrive in Chicago for the convention 42:50 The convention opens 48:37 The Grant Park protest 54:06 The worst night of violence begins 58:07 Hubert Humphrey gets tear gassed 58:32 Chaos on the floor of the convention 1:00:42 Humphrey wins the nomination 1:02:55 Eugene McCartney talks to the protesters 1:04:25 The effect on the democratic campaign 1:10:07 Hubert Humphrey tries to salvage his campaign Twitter: @TheRestHistory @holland_tom @dcsandbrook Producer: Theo Young-Smith Assistant Producer: Tabby Syrett Social Producer: Harry Balden Video Editor: Jack Meek Executive Producers: Jack Davenport + Tony Pastor
