Yasushi Akutagawa [芥川也寸志] (1925~1989, Japan) 交響曲第1番 第4楽章 (作曲者によるカット版) 4th mov. from Prima Sinfonia [cut version by the composer] Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra Yasushi Akutagawa, conducting Broadcast: February 24, 1984, TV program "Ongaku no hiroba (Music Square)" (音楽の広場) Yasushi Akutagawa was born in 1925 in Tokyo, Japan. Third son of Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Among the records in his house were Stravinsky's "Petrushka" and "The Firebird," which he enjoyed listening to in his childhood. In 1943, he entered the Tokyo Music School, where he composed "Trinita Sinfonica," which was well received and has been performed many times. During the difficult post-war period, he once formed a band to make a living. In 1950, his "Musica per Orchestra Sinfonica" won a special prize in a contest commemorating the 25th anniversary of NHK broadcasting, and since then he has been active as one of the most representative composers of the postwar generation. (From a message in the broadcast) -So, the next piece is by Mr. Akutagawa, what is...? Akutagawa: "Well, I played a symphony at the first concert. I'd like you to listen to a slightly shortened version of the last movement." -Then, please... Mr. Mayuzumi, what was Mr. Akutagawa's music like in those days? Mayuzumi: "Mr. Akutagawa was, and still is, very dashingly handsome, isn't he? Well, he also has a very romantic side to him. This piece, too, has a very familiar melody, a clear rhythm, and a romanticism... It's very good music." -Then, let's hear it, please. ( MUSIC PLAYING ) -How was it? It's been thirty years since you've played... Akutagawa: "Well, I'm really a little embarrassed, to tell you the truth... Thirty years ago... I don't have much experience in that kind of thing, but I guess it's like meeting a lover who broke up with me for the first time in a long time... (laughs)" -(laughs) I'm sorry... (From the same broadcast, hosted by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi) "Prima Sinfonia" is a revision of the "Sinfonia" in three movements, which premiered at the first concert of the "Sannin no Kai (Group of 3 composers)" in 1954, into a four movement form, and was premiered on December 8, 1955 at a subscription concert of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Masashi Ueda. This elaborate work, which lasts almost 30 minutes, shows his extraordinary enthusiasm for the symphony. [...] The fourth movement is a rhythmic and sometimes humorous Allegro molto. by Makoto Uehara from FOCD-9415/16 "yasushi akutagawa forever" booklet "Sannin no Kai (Group of 3 composers)" ... A musical group formed in 1953 by Yasushi Akutagawa, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Ikuma Dan. In contrast to post-war creative groups that, for a variety of reasons, mainly presented chamber music, the group formed by these three composers, who were in the journalistic limelight at the time, presented orchestral works with orchestras in spectacular fashion. In an interview, they said as follows "We want to be free to develop our talents without belonging to any organization or being bound by anything, and we want to actively call out and connect with the world through our compositions instead of just publishing research. For this purpose, it is more powerful to have three people together than one, and it is more reasonable to do film music, opera, ballet and more in consultation with each other, criticize each other, and stimulate each other." (Ongaku Shinbun, No. 546) At the first concert of their works in January 1954, they presented Dan's "Sinfonia Burlesca," Mayuzumi's "Bacchanale," and Akutagawa's "Sinfonia," and thereafter gave five concerts until 1962. Some of the most representative orchestral works of postwar Japan, such as Akutagawa's "Ellora Symphony," Mayuzumi's "Nirvana Symphony," and Dan's "Silk Road," were produced at the concerts of this group. from "Extra Issue of Ongaku Geijutsu: Japanese Composition in the 20th Century" (Ongaku no Tomo Sha, 1999) 芥川也寸志…1925年(大正14年)東京生まれ。
