Today I am filming from the city of Riga, and we will talk about the country of Latvia: the opportunities, residency programs, path to citizenship and everything else that you might want to consider. Latvia is a Baltic country, and its capital Riga is home to about 600 000 people. This country is not especially cheap, and local opportunities are not that amazing. Latvia offers a few residency options, it also allows dual citizenship with some exceptions. There are three residency programs that you might want to consider in Latvia. The first option is Digital Nomad visa. This visa is fairly easy to obtain. It requires that you have 2,5 times local minimum wage income. Processing time is fairly quick and this visa is renewable for a second year, making it 2 years in total. Latvia is a Schengen country, meaning you will get access to this entire region once you obtain their visa. Digital Nomad visa also offers great tax benefits - you will be able to pay little to no tax while living in Latvia. If you decide to switch to another visa and aim for permanent residency, they will count the time you spent in the country via the Digital Nomad visa towards permanent residency. The biggest downside of this visa is that it doesn't allow dependents. The second option is Startup Business visa. This visa will allow you to qualify for permanent residency after three years (as opposed to five). This requires meeting relatively high physical presence requirements in the country. The third option is The Golden Visa. The Latvia Golden Visa has been less attractive compared to programs in countries like Portugal or Greece. This option in theory has path to citizenship, but in reality it is not so straightforward as in Portugal. In order to qualify for citizenship in Latvia, you will need to learn Latvian language. Latvia has a great passport, but it is certainly not easy to get. You will need to live 10 year in Latvia in order to qualify. The golden visa is interesting because it only requires one annual visit for renewal and has no physical presence requirement. One option to qualify for the Golden Visa is to invest €50,000 into a local business that pays €40,000 annually in tax, plus a one-time €10,000 government fee. The second option is to buy real estate, with a minimum investment of €250,000, a 5% transaction cost government fee, and the requirement to keep the property at all times. The third option is the bank deposit route. The bank deposit option allows you to place funds in a local account, lock them there, and pay a government fee along with various associated charges. In the past Latvia used to be very popular for Offshore banking. Around ten years ago, people were impressed by how well they were treated at these major banks compared to their banks back home. The quality of service was amazing. Unfortunately this is not the case anymore. An alternative for safer investment is locking €280,000 in government bonds that pay no interest, plus fees, to qualify for residency in Latvia. For those seeking alternative options, a residence permit in the Schengen zone offers great flexibility with much faster processing than a Portuguese golden visa.
