For generations it was passed from fiddler to fiddler across Ireland, living only in the oral tradition until the mid-1800s, when Jane Ross of Derry heard a travelling blind fiddler playing it in the street. She wrote it down and sent it abroad, preserving a tune that might otherwise have been lost. In 1910, English songwriter Frederic Weatherly penned the verses to Danny Boy. At first, they were set to another melody — but in 1913, Weatherly’s sister-in-law sent him the Derry Air. The words and tune fit together perfectly, and the union created one of Ireland’s most beloved and enduring ballads, sung for over a century at farewells, weddings, and memorials around the world. But come you back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'tis I'll be there in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so. And if you come, when all the flowers are dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me I simply sleep in peace until you come to me.
