A playthrough of Konami's 1998 action-platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, Castlevania Legends. This video shows a playthrough of the "Standard" mode on the Super Game Boy. I finished the game with the good ending, achieved by collecting all five of the secret subweapon items. Castlevania Legends doesn't tend to be very popular at all with fans of the series. In fact, Mr. Igarashi himself has referred to the game as an embarrassment and struck its existence from the official series timeline. Apparently Castlevania ill needs an origin story such as Legends. You play as Sonia Belmont, progenitor of the vampire-hunting Belmont clan and first in the family to ever take on Count Dracula. There is a fair amount more to the story, but since most of that is delivered via text crawls near the end of the game, I won't spoil it for you here. I will say that if you aren't familiar with the game, you might get a kick out of a few of the game's plot revelations. They might not be considered canon anymore, but they do pose an interesting twist to how you view the characters of the series. The game plays somewhat like a somewhat-better fleshed-out take on the older Game Boy Castlevania games. You still battle your way through the grounds and the corridors of Dracula's castle in a bid to save humanity from evil with an upgradable whip, and this time you even sport a damned ugly hair-do. Just how does it defy gravity like that? That ponytail sticks out at a near 90 degree angle from the back of Sonia's head!! All of the stages offer a couple of branching paths where you'll find the classic subweapon items and heart caches, and each is capped off by a boss that, when defeated, will grant Sonia a "soul power," which is essentially the same as the sub-weapon system from the other games, but the powers - including a time-freeze, attack magic, and a healing spell - are freely selectable at anytime once earned. This is a cool idea, but it highlights one of the game's biggest flaws: the difficulty level is absolutely ridiculous. Castlevania The Adventure and Belmont's Revenge were no push-overs with their precision platforming and their endless insta-kill spike traps, but Castlevania Legends is merciless thanks to the enemies' constant respawning and cheap positioning. It's simply not fun to get hit the instant you switch screens because you weren't psychic enough to know where the enemy was standing in wait. The soul powers seem to be an attempt to address the problem - for a mere 20 hearts you can refill your entire life bar - but this seems to only provide the game with reason to throw even more unavoidable hazards at you. You also have access to a new "burning mode" that grants Sonia with temporary invincibility once a stage, but all this does is turn the boss fights an absolute joke. There were a lot of sound ideas here, but the execution feels off, and overall the gameplay is uncharacteristically rough for a Konami title. The graphics are good, though they do little to take advantage of the Super Game Boy, and the music is catchy, though the sound quality is surprisingly poor. They seemed to go for power with their instrument choices, but the abuse of the wave channel tends to makes most of the music sound harsh and rough. I really liked the way the game handled its story, the cinematics were good, and the inclusion of a bonus stage and multiple endings are all welcome, but ultimately the game is hampered by some really questionable, often unfair design choices. It's an interesting work for its place in Castlevania history, but it's without question one of the weakest titles of the series. _ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
