The MAF on my E39 BMW was causing it run rough especially trying to idle. It would run fine under load, but it refused to idle. it would die almost like it had a vacuum leak. I tried several times to find a vacuum leak using several methods, but I could never find the issue. The engine codes were related to the O2 sensors. I cleaned them, and still, the car wouldn't idle right. Finally, I was ready to look into the MAF being the issue. The E39 has a fun feature where it will run with the MAF disconnected; it goes into a default map that will run rich to be safe. I disconnected the MAF and started the car. It ran perfectly for 50 miles. I immediately ordered a new MAF when I got home. Installing a MAF on these cars is super easy. If you can change an air filter, you can change a MAF. Withe the new MAF installed, I cleared the codes, started the car, and everything was fixed. The key is to isolate the problem by disconnecting the MAF.
