Vismaya's husband Kirankumar was released from the Kollam district jail on Thursday after serving more than eight months in jail. According to the case, Vismaya, wife of Kiran Kumar, a former motor vehicle department official, committed suicide after being repeatedly harassed for demanding dowry. The bail plea was allowed by the Supreme Court as the trial in the case has reached the final phase at the Judicial First-Class Magistrate Court at Sasthamcotta in Kollam district. Vismaya was found hanging in the bathroom of her husband S Kiran Kumar's house at Sasthamkotta in Kollam district on June 21, 2021 after they tied the knot on May 31, 2020. Kumar was arrested later on a complaint by her parents and brother, alleging that he had tortured and harassed her over dowry. Kumar, the former Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector was dismissed from service as per the Kerala Civil Service Rules, 1960 following the incident. A day before the incident, Vismaya had sent WhatsApp messages to her relatives over the alleged harassment by Kumar over dowry. She had also sent photos of wounds and marks of beatings on her body. Her father told media 100 sovereigns of gold and over one acre land, besides a Rs 10 lakh worth car were given as dowry to Kumar during the wedding in 2020. But Kumar did not like the car and wanted Rs 10 lakh in cash. When the family refused, he tortured her.
