Here’s a bullet-point list of what happens in this chapter. I apologize in advance: I think I twice get Darnay and Carton mixed up while explaining this plot!#TWINS You’ll need to reference my annotations to catch important details that could be quiz questions. -Charles sits alone in his cell and contemplates his death, moving from fear to gradual acceptance -Prisoners were allowed to write to loved ones, so Charles buys paper, ink, and a light to write a letter to Lucie and Dr. Manette -Suddenly he hears footsteps. John Barsad lets Sydney Carton into Darnay’s cell -Darnay immediately thinks that Carton has also been taken prisoner -Carton says he is there with words from Lucie -First he tells Darnay to do as he is told and take off his boots -When Carton takes off his own shoes and puts Darnay’s boots on, Darnay says there is no way of escaping -Carton is vague….did I say anything about escaping? -They switch the rest of their clothes, and Carton even takes Darnay’s hair tie -Then Carton tells Darnay to write a letter addressed to no one and write what he dictates -Carton dictates a letter to Lucie reminding her of their conversation many years ago when he promised to make any sacrifice to keep her loved ones with her -Darnay has no idea what any of it means, but soon it does not matter because Carton has released the chemical that will knock Darnay out -Carton puts the letter in his own pocket -Barsad comes in and sees Darnay passed out and Carton wearing Darnay’s clothes -He calls two more guards to help him, saying that the visitor was so upset he has fainted -They cart Darnay out of the prison on a stretcher and Carton sits to wait -Moments later, the guards come to get the prisoners and Carton follows as instructed -Another incoming prisoner sees Carton and embraces him (thinking he is Darnay) -A young peasant girl also recognizes him as Darnay and tells him that she is sorry for his fate -She explains that she is sentenced to death for plotting, though she has never done that -She is afraid, so she asks to sit by Carton, but then she recognizes that he is not Darnay -She promises to keep the secret as they head to the Guillotine -Meanwhile, Mr. Lorry has loaded everyone and their luggage into the carriage and headed for the city barrier -They are questioned at the barrier in a routine way — people questioned are Mr. Lorry, Lucie, Dr. Manette and Sydney Carton (who they explain is ill) and they are easily let on through -Lucie is so afraid that she wants the carriage to go faster, but Mr. Lorry says it is important to look ‘normal’ and not look like they are fleeing -They have to stop at a small town to switch out the horses and the carriage drivers, and then they head on into the night. -Charles Darnay begins to stir, but they keep him subdued and head for Calais where, if all goes well, they will take the boat to Dover and be free!
