Dr. Shabir Aly says that by engaging in Islamic practices, we are enhancing both our spirituality and our physical fitness. The Muslim prayer involves constant movement even whilst being a deep spiritual experience and conversation with God. Fasting involves the deprivation of the body of food and drink. It trains us to be in survival mode and helps us achieve fitness, and at the same time, it’s a spiritual exercise, because while we are fasting we draw closer to God. The Hajj involves a lot of walking, and yet we are to remember God at every juncture of the pilgrimage. This spirit-body connection makes for a more holistic connection with God and with our world.
