Fali Nariman's ADVICE to Young Advocates | How to succeed in profession | says

Fali Nariman is a senior Advocate and renowned jurist. Awarded with a Padma Bhushan (1991) and Padma Vibhushan (2007), he was an Additional Solicitor General of India from May 1972- June 1975. He is one of India's most distinguished constitutional lawyers. This video has Mr. Fali Nariman, now aged 94, giving his advice to the young lawyers on how to prepare a case.At the start, Mr. Nariman suggests the youngsters to pick up good command over the language. It would need to be cultivated. He reminds me that English is not a foreign language. He asks the young professionals to remain update with the latest case law. They need to work very hard.Be a student of law for life. Life is vast and unfathomable. Take care to read the book by Justices Robert Jackson and Frankfurter of the US Supreme Court. Read the book 'The World of Law'. It is in two parts.Part one is on 'Law as Literature', while the second is 'Law in Literature'. The mere presence in the court helps in beneficial learning. While in the court, there should be no time for pleasantries. Never tell a story in a court. Always be serious and maintain a professional stance. Never display your irritability in the court. Never be angry in the court. Don't ever ask the court to bear with you. Think it is possible that you may be mistaken. An advocate should never quarrel with one's colleagues. Do take care never to be mean or uncharitable to the opponents. The judges must always be addressed correctly. Some judges are more sensitive than others. A judge should never be criticized. Invariably talk less, reflect more. Learn to lose with dignity. Don't rush to conclusions about a judge who is hearing your case. Mutual good faith between the bench and bar is a must.
