El Medano (Spanish, "The sand dune") is a town in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, on the island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. It is located about 11 kilometers from the town of Granadilla, reaching an average altitude of 75 meters above sea level. El Medano ( Spanish: The Sand Dune ) is a district of the municipality of Granadilla de Abona on the Canary Island of Tenerife , which belongs to the Spanish province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife . It has 8,407 inhabitants (as of 2021). The town is located on a small bay on the southeast coast a few kilometers east of Tenerife South Airport . To the south rises La Montaña Roja ("The Red Mountain"), the eroded remains of an old cinder cone , which is a nature reserve. From the top of this elevation you can overlook El Medano and part of the surrounding area. To the west of El Medano lies Playa La Tejita . Due to the strong and consistent winds, El Medano is a popular holiday destination for windsurfers . Water sports enthusiasts can find training conditions for all experience levels at three spots .
