President of the Industrial Court Deborah Thomas-Felix has granted permission to allow Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi to be involved in the hearing between the Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) and Petrotrin but only in terms of remedies. As the hearing started in the Industrial Court on Tuesday, State Attorney, Senior Counsel Seenath Jairam, argued that the AG was entitled to intervene in the matter, as neither Petrotrin nor the Union could fairly represent the best interest of the public. Ms Thomas-Felix said AG Al-Rawi's involvement will only be in terms of remedies or sanctions if the state-owned oil company was found to have committed an offense. Earlier this month the OWTU filed a complaint in the Industrial Court alleging that Petrotrin failed "in good faith to treat and to enter into negotiation with the Union for the purpose of collective bargaining". On October 19th, The Court of Appeal ruled in favour of Petrotrin dismissing an injunction stopping the company from terminating workers. To date, at least 75% of Petrotrin's employees have collected termination letters while the remaining percent had letters sent by registered mail.
