On 7:35AM US Eastern Time on August 1st 2008, The Sims Online was closed by EA. This video documents the interface and some minor gameplay elements for archiving purposes. There are some points in the video that should be clarified. At 0:50, I enter The Skilling Place as a visitor. I have limited access to buy mode to trade objects with other Sims; this is why the buy mode button is enabled. At 1:58, carley sings to Madame Zero in order to increase her mood. At 7:35, I enter my lot as a roommate. (The lot owner is Lordon.) I have full access to buy mode, but not build mode. Presumably, I have reached my object limit. Here is some background information on the closure of The Sims Online. The Sims Online was released in 2002, an online version of The Sims. The cost to play was $10 per month, although there was a 30-day free trial. You might remember seeing the game in various electronic outlets. In May 2007, after noticing the subscriber population had diminished drastically, what was left of the TSO team started to rewrite the game engine and possibly modernize the game, dubbing this as the TSO-E project. The team was headed by Luc Barthelet, who re-joined the team after having left it since the game's launch. On February 2008, this code became rebranded as EA-Land, which hosted a server which anybody could connect to for free, without a monthly subscription, called Test Center 3 (the other server, The Sims Online, still required a paid subscription). Barthelet's team continued to push out some minor updates to the game, such as the ability to display custom image files on an easel for your visitors. In late April, the team announced that EA had discontinued the project and that the game would be shut down on August 1st, the same year. The last version of The Sims Online was: 2.1667.5.0. Since the game closed, various projects have spawned to revive the game; some are reverse-engineering the game protocol, and others are reimplementing the game and adding new features not found in the original game.
