In this video, the co-founder of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO), Mike Rock, recounts the long struggle that led U.S. air traffic controllers, employees of the Federal Aviation Administration, to organize their own union, PATCO, in 1968. Rock gave this lecture on Jan. 10, 1979, in Silver Spring, Maryland, to a group of PATCO activists from around the country as they began to prepare for their 1981 contract negotiation with the federal government. When that negotiation later went awry, PATCO called a historic strike that was decisively broken by President Ronald Reagan. Here, Rock, a colorful organizer, explains the grievances that led controllers to organize in the first place, offering vivid descriptions of the working conditions that controllers endured in the 1950s and 1960s.
