On Saturday, Myanmar’s National Unity Government, an opposition group coordinating resistance against the ruling military, announced a temporary unilateral ceasefire to support earthquake relief efforts. The death toll from the disaster has risen to one thousand six hundred forty-four people. This number saw a sharp increase from one thousand two just hours earlier, highlighting the challenge of confirming casualties in the vast affected region. Officials warned that the figures could continue to rise following the powerful Friday earthquake. The number of injured individuals has climbed to three thousand four hundred eight, while one hundred thirty-nine people remain missing. In neighboring Thailand, the number of confirmed deaths has increased to seventeen. The earthquake shook the Greater Bangkok area, home to approximately seventeen million residents, as well as other parts of the country. Many areas in the northern part of Thailand reported structural damage, but all fatalities occurred in Bangkok. Among the deceased, ten people lost their lives when a high-rise building near the famous Chatuchak Market collapsed. The remaining victims perished in seven separate locations across the city. Bangkok authorities have reported that eighty-three people are still missing. On Saturday, additional heavy machinery was brought in to clear the massive piles of debris. Despite these efforts, the hope of finding survivors among friends and families has begun to fade. Thailand’s Meteorological Department recorded seventy-seven aftershocks following the Myanmar earthquake. In Myanmar, emergency response teams continue to focus on the most severely impacted cities: Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, and Naypyidaw, the capital. Search and rescue operations have been launched across affected regions. International assistance has started to arrive to help manage the crisis. However, relief teams face significant challenges due to damage inflicted on airports and transportation infrastructure. Many roads in the disaster zones have become impassable due to landslides and structural collapses. Rescue workers are using helicopters and boats to reach remote communities cut off by the destruction. Hospitals in Myanmar are overwhelmed with the growing number of injured victims. Temporary shelters have been set up to provide aid to those who lost their homes. Local authorities are urging people to remain cautious as aftershocks continue to rattle the region.
