A Central Venous catheter or Central Line, is a catheter placed into a large vein in the neck, chest, or groin. In this video I explain step by step how to place a central line with ultrasounds imaging It is usually placed in the intensive care unit and indications include 1) Administration of vasopressor medications, high dose potassium, or TPN 2) Additional venous access in patients with severe peripheral vascular disease 3) Measurement of central venous pressures 4) Need for frequent blood draws 5) Need for large volume resuscitation Risks: Potential complications are very dependent on the experience of the operator and the conditions under which the line is placed (emergent vs elective) 1) Infection 2) Vascular injury 3) Nerve Injury 4) Pneumothorax (When placing in the Internal Jugular vein or Subclavian) 5) Thrombosis
