If you sit at your workstation, the first thing you need to do is make sure that you have a STABLE and ADJUSTABLE chair that provides proper support for your back, and you need to make sure that it’s set up correctly before you begin working. • You should start by sitting back into your chair as far as possible, but make sure you’re comfortable. • Then you should pull your shoulders back and make sure your back is upright. • Then adjust the backrest so you can feel it supporting your lower back and the curve of your spine. • Once you’ve done that, you might need to raise or lower your seat because your forearms need to rest horizontally on your desk. Just make sure your shoulders are relaxed and that your elbows are at a right angle. • If you have armrests, you may need to adjust their height too. The aim is to have your arms and wrists flat and straight when you rest your hands on your desk. • Your legs should fit comfortably under your desk and your feet should be flat on the floor, with your hips slightly higher than your knees. Make sure you don’t feel too much pressure on the underside of your thighs or the back of your knees. • If your feet don’t touch the floor, you can use a footrest - but only use one if you have to, because it can affect your posture. When you’re sitting down, your back should be firmly supported by the chair, your neck should be naturally straight and your shoulders should be relaxed.
