Elder Scrolls Online has now opened its marble jaws to Oblivion (well, to pre-order customers anyway), and as expected this is a decent but unremarkable MMO with a thin layer of Skyrim-esque exploration. It's almost impossible to figure out who this game is actually *for*, but the generic high fantasy style mandated by the Elder Scrolls source material certainly doesn't help this online RPG stand out from the crowd. In terms of combat ESO is definitely closer to Neverwinter and Guild Wars than World of Warcraft or The Old Republic, but the quest design is pure MMO filler. I have nothing against subscription fees per se (they were never what was wrong with this genre in the first place), but ZeniMax will have a hard time making the case that there's anything particularly worthwhile to see here that you can't get from any number of other MMOs currently available. Also, the city of Daggerfall seems to have shrunk considerably since last seen in the 1996 singleplayer game of the same name...
