Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden unexplained death of babies. In the past it has been referred to as "crib death." Recent studies have shown that the way in which a baby sleeps, can help to reduce the incidence of SIDS. Pediatrician Dr. Frederick Mandell explains. Frederick Mandell, MD: So many parents asked this question about how they going to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. The idea that sudden infant death syndrome can be prevented by sleep position is a very important concept for parents. Sudden infant death syndrome, used to be called crib death, is the sudden unexpected death of an infant, usually between the ages of 1 week to 1 year and these babies died very quietly and there is no real explanation for the cause of death. Some recent studies have shown that putting babies on their back diminish the number of babies who die in various countries all over the world, including the United States, and what used to be an incidence of 2 to 3 babies who died per thousand live births is now down to less than 1 baby dying per 1000 live births. So, the answer to the question as to the way of preventing sudden infant death syndrome by putting babies on their back but it does not prevents sudden infant death syndrome in its entirety. Frederick Mandell, MD is a pediatrician practicing in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Dr. Mandell has been in practice for 44 years specializing in pediatric urology.
