Can a wooden box help improve your life?

Hi folks, I'm Mike Schienle and welcome to Wind Ridge Wood Crafts. Today I’m happy to show you these beautiful hand-sized octagonal boxes in cherry and walnut. But here’s a question – can a wooden box help you take 100% responsibility for your life? Stick with me, and I think you’ll see how. We’re starting with a rough cherry cant on my 14-inch Grizzly bandsaw. Cherry is my wife Rev. Dr. Rhonda Schienle’s favorite – that warm medium color, easy to work with, and it finishes beautifully. Among other services, Rhonda does weekly Facebook talks on spiritual topics that uplift and empower people. Recently she gave a talk on Ho’oponopono. That talk inspired these boxes as gentle daily reminders for her clients. So what exactly is Ho’oponopono? At its core, it’s a simple yet profound Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness that teaches us to take 100% responsibility for everything that shows up in our experience. Not blame – responsibility. The tool is just four short phrases repeated silently or aloud to Divinity, however you understand that: I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. Here on the Onefinity Journeyman CNC, I’m flattening both sides of the three cherry boards I just resawed. Getting them perfectly flat and parallel is essential before we start carving. Rhonda and I have been practicing Ho’oponopono for over a decade now. We’ve even taught small classes in a local movie theater conference room. Earlier this month we had an interesting situation that was a reminder of this practice. The short story is we gave our family room furniture to friends. We placed our order for new furniture at a large showroom. Then waited. And waited. And then it was cancelled when the manufacturer went out of business. No money was gone, the order was simply cancelled. On the way to the furniture showroom we talked about the opportunity this provided. We had previously chosen something with bells and whistles that didn't really suit us and we both had some misgivings about the choice. We ended up with a much better package for our needs, delivered on time with wonderful service every step of the way. Now the CNC is V-carving the four Ho’oponopono phrases onto the top – “I love you” at the top. One of the most famous stories comes from the book Zero Limits. Dr. Hew Len worked as a psychologist at a Hawaii state hospital ward for the criminally insane. The ward had high staff turnover and difficult conditions. Instead of meeting patients directly, he reviewed their files and cleaned on himself – repeating the phrases to clear whatever he was contributing to the shared reality. Over months and years, patient conditions improved dramatically, medications were reduced, and eventually the ward closed because it was no longer needed. By the way, it's snowing outside and and 45 degrees inside the shop. I’ve switched to walnut here just for a little variety. I’m drilling six alignment holes in the board and six matching holes in the spoilboard so dowels can keep everything perfectly registered when I flip the piece for interior carving. Now the CNC is doing all the interior work. Finally, it will cut the base and top octagons from the board. Those compartments, by the way, are perfect for watches, jewelry, gemstones, spices – anything small you want to keep safe and organized. But the real value is that every time you approach the box, those four phrases greet you. It’s a built-in invitation to clean, to release whatever no longer serves you, and to choose peace instead. Over a decade of practice, Rhonda and I have found it keeps resentment from building, keeps gratitude flowing, and keeps our relationship and daily life feeling fresh and connected. After cutting out the octagons, it’s time for sanding. People who first encounter Ho'oponopono often ask, “What are you sorry for if you didn’t cause the problem?” The “I’m sorry” and “Please forgive me” aren’t about guilt – they’re acknowledging that some memory in us is contributing to perceiving the problem, and we’re asking Divinity to clear it. “Thank you” and “I love you” express gratitude and return to love. The Ryobi belt and disc sander does a great job smoothing these edges. Now I’m applying Minwax Antique Oil Finish – it feeds the wood, brings out the grain beautifully, and gives a warm, natural hand-rubbed feel. Final step on the bench – installing the SOSS BH104 barrel hinges. So yes – a simple wooden box, engraved with four short phrases, "I love you", "I'm sorry", "Please forgive me", "Thank you", can absolutely help you take 100% responsibility for your life, one cleaning at a time. Thank you, Rev. Dr. Rhonda Schienle, for thirty-three-plus years of love, faith, and companionship, and for continually inspiring family, friends, and colleagues on their spiritual journeys. Thanks for watching. May your days be filled with peace, gratitude, and beautiful wood grain. See you in the shop next time.
