In this episode, we explore the artistry, passion, and dedication behind handmade wooden toys, corn shuck dolls, and folk art creations. 🎨 Featured Craftsmen & Artists: 🔹 Bill Henry – Master woodcarver from Greeneville, Tennessee, renowned for his finely crafted traditional toys. From Greeneville, Tennessee, he was a master whittler and made jack straws, which were part of a game like pickup sticks. Bill worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratories and in his down time there he used an electrician’s knife to whittle. 🔹 Janet Morris – Expert corn shuck doll maker from Black Mountain, North Carolina, preserving an age-old Appalachian craft. When her husband died in 1972, Mrs. Morris had to find a way to support her six children, so she took up crafting. She made corn shuck dolls and angels and all sorts of wheat weavings and sold them at craft fairs 🔹 Harold Garrison – Folk artist from Jupiter, North Carolina, known for his whimsical and nostalgic toy designs. At 6 foot 10 inches tall, Harold Garrison was an imposing figure, and stood even taller when he wore his black stovepipe hat. 🔹 Bob Miller – Skilled children’s toy maker from Brevard, North Carolina, handcrafting classic wooden playthings. Bob made a variety of children’s toys and shared them with the young folks who came through the Cradle of Forestry in Pisgah National Forest, where he sat outside an old commissary building entertaining visitors with his tall tales. 🔹 Brown Norton, maker of handmade crafts, from Madison County, North Carolina 🔹 Janet Wiseman – Representative of the Southern Highland Craft Guild at the Folk Art Center in Asheville, North Carolina, discussing the legacy of handmade toys in Appalachian culture. 📍 This episode brings you closer to the heart of American folk craftsmanship.
