Wide people clapping STORYLINE: Hong Kong's newly appointed cardinal said Tuesday that China's communist government needs to overcome "old prejudices" toward the Catholic Church for the Vatican to make a break through in forging relations with Beijing. But Bishop Joseph Zen said he was hopeful in the long run, insisting that there was no harsh reaction from China to his appointment even though he was told to avoid politics. Zen said he felt it was his civic responsibility to express his opinions."As long as I am the bishop of Hong Kong, I think its my duty to express my opinion about politics". Zen, who is seen as an outspoken supporter of religious freedom, said he will continue speaking out on social issues and believes Beijing will come around eventually. In an interview with The Associated Press while on a brief visit to Rome, he said that if the pope can do it for the whole world, he can do it for Hong Kong. China cut ties with the Vatican in 1951, shortly after the Communist Party took power in Beijing. Worship is only allowed in government-controlled churches, although (m) millions of Chinese Catholics belong to the so-called "underground church" loyal to Rome. Zen called it a "desire, but it's possible" that China and the Vatican may resolve their differences in time for the Summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008.
