A step-by-step tutorial for implanting screw electrodes used for recording multichannel electroencephalographic (EEG) data from the surface of an adult rat brain. The electrodes rest on the cortical surface and are analogous to grid electrodes used in clinical intracranial monitoring. An adult, male Sprague Dawley rat was fully anesthetized and lubricating eye ointment was used to prevent dryness and protect the surface of the eyes during the implantation. All procedures follow and comply with the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals: Eighth Edition (2011), Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) policies, procedures and guidelines.
