Chapter 74 – A VISIT TO MACAU DAY ONE: Early in the new year, we decided to visit Macau. I had not been there for a few years, so I was interested to see how it had changed. We took the ferry, which takes about 70 minutes, to travel between Shekou and Tapa ferry terminals. The ferry terminal had been recently rebuilt and was clean and modern. Arriving in Macau, we took the hotel’s complimentary bus from the terminal and checked into the Parsian Hotel at the opulent lobby decorated with faux French-style art. We walked through the Rotunda with its impressive fountain and frescoed ceilings, and went up to our very spacious room. The Parisian hotel features a scale model of the Eiffel Tower out front. It is located right across the street from The Londoner, which has a façade modelled after the British Houses of Parliament, and a version of Big Ben. We set out to explore, starting at the Londoner, which had a vast glass ‘crystal palace’ type atrium, decorated with statues of famous British people, and a fancy shopping mall with many luxury brands on its ground floor. It has a full-size, typical London bus where the windows have been replaced with video screens. When we came back outside, it was already dark, so we were able to enjoy the lights. We had supper at the large food court on the 3rd floor of the Parisian shopping mall, then took a brief walk around the Parisian mall to look at the luxury brand stores. DAY TWO: After breakfast, we visited the scale model of the Eiffel Tower. On the escalator on the way up to the tower, we passed a nod to the Moulin Rouge, and a plaque honouring Gustave Eiffel. We took the elevator to the upper observation platform, where we had stunning views of the Parisian, its swimming pools and water park, The Londoner, Studio City, The Venetian, and many other buildings on the Cotai Strip. After taking a look at the fountain in front of the Parisian, we walked over to Studio City to take some exterior photos, then over to the Venetian for more photos, including the ornately decorated main lobby. We took a quick look around the ‘fake Venice’ shopping mall upstairs at the Venetian. We walked to the Wynn to see the fountains and the many interesting buildings along the way, including the New MGM hotel, which had a fascinating art exhibit in the lobby. We arrived at the Wynn Palace just after dark with plenty of time to enjoy the fountains, which had a show synchronised to music every 30 minutes. We went to a cosy restaurant called the Amora in the quaint old quarter amongst the narrow walking streets, for a fabulous supper of pork ribs and suckling pig roasted to perfection, accompanied by sweet potato fries, salad and sangria. The main reason people come to Macau is the Casinos, the only place in China where gambling is legal. You are not allowed to take pictures in the casinos, but I managed to sneak some by hiding a camera under my coat. DAY THREE: The next day, we made our way to the ferry terminal and took the ferry back to Shenzhen.
