Quasi-experimental designs lack random assignment to groups, so they are not as internally valid as randomized controlled trials. But they are used because true experiments are sometimes exceedingly difficult or unethical, or when the scientist wants to study the effect of a policy change or historical event. Example of the Chicago Longitudinal Study, which examined the impact of an early childhood intervention that targeted economically disadvantaged preschoolers and followed them for several decades to track outcomes.
