Kes (based on the book a Kestral for a Knave), was released in 1969. Since then, it's significance as a social commentary is still relevant today. However, Kes and other realist productions such as Billy Elliot, Trainspotting, Threads, This is England, Coronation Street, I Daniel Blake, East Enders, Royal Family, and others, may not exist today if it wasn't for the historic influence of The British New Wave, otherwise known as Kitchen Sink Realism. In this video essay, I dive into the reasoning and history behind social realism films within the UK. Touching on films such as Sapphire, a Taste of Honey, The Loneliness of the Long Distance runner, and more to analyse the impact such films have had on the British Film industry and beyond.
