The community is inhabited by the Mushuau Innu First Nation. Natuashish (Little Sango Pond) was established in 2002 as a planned community, in the hopes of resolving the social problems that had plagued the prior community of Davis Inlet, 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) away. The community continues to struggle with drug abuse and youth boredom. As recently as 2017, gas sniffing by youths has been a notable issue. Natuashish is inaccessible by road and may be reached, only by air, or sea. The Naskapi traditionally lived in the interior of Labrador and Quebec. In 1830, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) established a trading post at Fort Chimo, Rupert's Land and in 1831, they established one at Davis Inlet, Labrador. The HBC traded ammunition, tobacco and alcohol to the Naskapi, in exchange for fur. It is likely, that the substance abuse problems that exist among the Mushuau Innu people started, when the HBC arrived. After the province joined Canada, in 1949, the 'Indian Act' was not applied to the Innu people, since according to the commission, status Indians at the time did not have the right to vote, while Indigenous Peoples of Labrador had the right to vote before Confederation. The Innu were mostly unaware of the 'Act' and the treaties with the First Nations in other provinces, until the "White Paper controversy", in 1969. Many Innu people felt, that the federal and provincial governments had ignored them. The Innu people were 'promised' modern housing in their new settlement however, the houses were poorly constructed and lacked running water during winters, ..while other houses lacked running water at all. The tough land prevented the houses from having basements and prevented the community from having a sewage system.Because, of these situations suicide and substance abuse were commonplace, among the Mushuau Innu. In 1992, six unattended children were killed in a house fire and in 1993, a video of young children huffing gasoline and shouting that they wanted to die gained national attention. In order to protect their interests, their land and their rights from outside forces, the Innu People first organized themselves in 1976 under the Naskapi Montagnais Innu Association (NMIA). In 1990, the NMIA changed its name to the Innu Nation. In addition to the Innu Nation, residents of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish elect their own band council and the Chiefs of both councils are members of The Executive Council of the Innu Nation. The Innu Nation's mandate is to speak as one voice, to protect the interests of the Innu people and to oversee all its political and business affairs.
