In the year 1864 Antonio de Torres build the FE 17 for his own use. In 1869 at the age of 17, Francisco Tárrega visited the Torres workshop with the intention of purchasing a guitar. The instrument Tárrega was planning to buy was much more modest than the FE17 built in 1869, but upon hearing him play, Torres offered this special guitar to Tárraga . It was the sound of this guitar that inspired Tárrega and set him on the journey to composing some of the most famous pieces ever written for classical guitar, including Recuerdos de la Alhambra, Capricho Arabe and Gran Vals. Emilio Pujol, one of Francisco Tárraga’s most talented and subsequently well known pupils remarked that the FE17 was the best guitar he had ever heard. The FE17 replica by Wolfgang Jellinghaus remains true to the original in many aspects, but comes with the option of various woods for the back/sides.
