Walimbe Hela (2,159 ft amsl) lies in the Nuwaragala Forest Reserve in the Ampara District. Portuguese mariners approaching the East Coast of Sri Lanka could see the Peak from the ocean and its unique shape made them name it Friar’s Hood. A Friar is a monk from certain religious orders within the Catholic Church.. Their attire includes a Capuche cowl, a long, pointed hood. The shape of the rock outcrop led to its name Friar’s Hood. "Walimbe" means "the highest place" in Veddha (indigenous community) language. Accordingly it has been called Walimbe Hela by the Veddhas since time immemorial.
