How to fix front derailleur chain rub when rubbing occurs not just in the large or small cassette but multiple cogs. Remember that the gear combination of large chainring / the larger 1 or 2 cassette cog OR small chain ring and smaller 1 or 2 cassette cogs will often rub no matter what you do. This is often referred to as "bicycle cross chaining." These combination of gears can lead to undo stress on the chain with increase chain wear, cog wear. When I begin hearing any rubbing, I know it's time to shift to a larger or small chain ring up front to prevent rubbing and chain damage. We'll show you how to fix the problem using a Shimano equiped bicycle but the process is the same for other front derailleurs on a road bike, trail bike or mountain bike by performing some front derailleur adjustment. 1. First try again to adjust the limiting screws of the front derailleur. The inner limiting screw controls placement of the inner plate of the front derailleur and the outer limiting screw controls the placement of the outer plate (re-adjust the tension on the front derailleur cable if needed). 2. Check the derailleur plates are parallel with the chain rings and the tail of the derailleur is not pointed inward or outward. 3. When shifted to the large chainring, make sure the outer plate of the front derailleur clears the teeth of the chainring by 2-3 mm. 4. If all else seems to be inorder, one can try adding a washer between where the outer plate is screwed into the inner plate. We show you how. 5. Finally, one can carefully try to pry the derailleur plates apart with needle nose pliers to give more room between the plate, but use CAUTION! This method can eliminate the rubbing but I've broken a derailleur with this technique. Check that the chain shift smoothly from the small chain ring to the large chain ring. You may have to make and adjustment (tweek) the outer limiting screws of the bike to achieve a smooth shift and prevent a dropped chain. Now your ready to cycle. Note: Adjust the cable tension only if you can't turn the limiting screws enough, i.e. they're at their limit.
