In this psychoeducation video, Dr. Kate Truitt explains that there is power in getting to know the different emotional experiences of our world and recognizing them as different parts of our overarching selves. These parts of us tend to show up over the course of our brain’s development, and they can be triggered by external stimuli in the world around us. Dr. Kate then goes on to remind us that Amy the amygdala is a fierce protector and maternal figure, but even she can get a little confused. Amy can take on and have different relationships with many different feeling states. Thus, she asks us to think about how many parts show up for us in our day to day life. Some of the states could have been brief, but others might have been a more intense experience. Dr. Kate explains that although all feeling states should be heard, states like anger or loneliness are often the parts that need to be seen or heard. Dr. Kate explains that we are often taught that these less preferable feeling states are weaknesses that need to be “fixed”; however, these states that we view as weaknesses are often our most powerful--they just need a new job! In order to accomplish this, she suggests making a list of the heavy feeling parts and then asking ourselves, “If this energy could have a different job, what might it do?” For more information and blogs visit DrTruitt.com, find inspiration on Instagram @Dr.KateTruitt, join Dr. Kate live Clubhouse @DrKateTruitt, and subscribe to us here for weekly videos!
