#fantasymusic,#mermaids,#sirenssong Long ago, when tall ships were carried by the wind, it was said that these ships were often led to rocky shores by the voices of beautiful creatures named Sirens. Some said they were half bird and half woman and that their intentions were to lead the ships to their demise for the ill purposes of consuming all therein. But I have another perspective of that story to share with you, one that perhaps you haven’t heard before. It began during a great storm in the northern sea when a ship, filled with explorers seeking new land in the West, they were met with one of the sharpest lightning storms they had ever witnessed. The ship was tossed about endlessly for hours and the crew had long lost their way by the time they came upon unseen dangers ahead. Before them, in the distant mist, lay rocky shores with sharp and jagged rocks just beneath the ocean’s surface. As the storm was still churning and the men were already exhausted from hours of being thrown about, they cautiously held on as they tried to get their bearings. Suddenly, as the storm began to rage once more, and lightening struck the ship, they saw their sails go ablaze with purple fire. The men were mystified by the spectacle and as they stood watching the sails glow with the purple light, from the distant mist, they heard what sounded like gentle echoes and female voices. Unable to see where the voices were coming from, the captain looked through his looking glass and slowly turned back towards the men putting it down. He stood for a moment with a perplexed look on his face. The men, wondering what he’d seen, asked anxiously if there was any sight of land and where the voices were coming from. The captain only turned and shook his head slowly as if confused, then yelling at the top of his lungs, shouted they were to turn the ship about as he hopped up and took the wheel to sail in another direction. Later, as the storm had settled, the men asked what made him change direction. This is when the captain, sitting with a tall drink in hand, told them about the sight he had seen through the mist. He described them as beautiful women, but half women and half sea creature, all sat upon the rocks looking right at them. He explained to them somewhat cautiously, that he could almost hear their thoughts as they chanted repeatedly…”Beware.. the rocks lie below.. and death awaits those who cross this way.” The captain said, they were sitting there, some with raised hand, as if pleading to be heard. The men, sat quietly in wonder, and some in disbelief. To this day, the story has been retold many times and as mentioned before, has changed with age. But this is the story told to me and the one I choose to believe. If you should ever be on the sea and hear gentle echoes, I’d beware of rocky shores and heed the warning of the mermaid siren’s songs. That’s if you believe the mermaids hearts were true.
