What if the future of biochar is non-agricultural applications? In this conversation with Andre van Zyl, we discuss his Australia-based company NPS, and his mission to sequester carbon by building roads. A few things stand out for me after talking with Andre: 1) People working in oil and gas have been thinking about how to reduce the carbon intensity of their processes for a long time (they've been under political pressure to do so for the last 20 years). Figuring out how to get them to use their insights to reduce carbon intensity in other markets would be a great boon for the climate movement. 2) Andre makes a compelling point around feedstock quality that I haven't heard much about. If we can pyrolyze things that are true waste (things otherwise destined for the landfill) then perhaps we can get around the cost issues that have plagued biochar businesses until now. 3) Avoided emissions are critical, and perhaps overlooked. Andre's product allows him to sequester hundreds of tons of biochar per kilometer of road built. Impressive! And yet, I walked away from the conversation thinking that the implied avoided emissions of using his product (smaller factory, continuous production, minimal waste, no heat, forgiving transportation and installation requirements) were perhaps 10x the amount of carbon sequestered in the road. Extraordinary. 4) Last, and surely not least, for everyone looking for growth, NPS's growth curve is wild. Let's hope he can stay on it. Thanks Andre for joining us and spilling your wisdom! Good luck to NPS in the coming months. Links: Website: www.nps.world Presentation that's more technically about his product: • Andre van Zyl
