Here you can see various emergency operations as part of this year's ICAO exercise at Berlin Brandenburg Airport. These exercises are mandatory for an airport every two years, worldwide. The response times, working methods, and cooperation between the airport fire department and local emergency services are tested. This year, a very special scenario was on the agenda. Initially, a report is received about a passenger plane approaching with control difficulties. The airport fire department heads to the designated staging areas to secure the landing. At the same time, fire brigades and rescue services from Brandenburg and Berlin are alerted to the airport under the keyword "Large-scale air emergency." They are also instructed to proceed to the northern staging area at the old Terminal 5. While some local units are still on their way, a loud bang and smoke are reported. The aircraft has crashed outside the airport grounds. The airport fire department receives clearance for the so-called crash gate. These gates are located at the ends of the runways and are specifically designed for this scenario a plane crash or emergency landing outside the airport. The airport fire engines (FLF) have a special battering ram at the front, which is used to break through the otherwise well-secured gates. You can see this in the first video. It is likely the first video of this kind. The front ram is easily replaceable and prevents damage to the vehicle itself. This exit is only intended for the first ICAO response unit. Other units are instructed to reach the incident site via normal exits. Afterwards, local units from Berlin and Brandenburg follow, first heading to the staging area and then moving to the incident site from there.
