A penetrating brain injury is a severe form of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs when an object breaks through the skull and enters the brain tissue. Common causes include gunshot wounds, stab injuries, or high-impact trauma from debris or shrapnel. These injuries are considered medical emergencies and require immediate neurosurgical evaluation. Depending on the object’s location and depth, symptoms can range from loss of consciousness, neurological deficits, seizures, and bleeding, to long-term effects such as cognitive or motor impairment. Rapid imaging with CT scans is essential to assess the extent of damage and plan for surgical intervention. Treatment may involve surgical debridement, repair of blood vessels and brain tissue, removal of foreign material, and management of swelling or infection risk. Outcomes vary depending on the severity of the injury, the area of the brain affected, and how quickly care is initiated. Close monitoring and follow-up are crucial for managing complications and supporting neurological recovery after a penetrating brain injury.
