Two days ago, on August 18, 2024, Alain Delon passed away. French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to him, stating that Delon was "more than a star, a monument of French culture." Alain Delon was indeed one of the most outstanding figures in global cinema and a symbol of French film. He was not merely a movie star, nor simply one of the most handsome or charming actors in the world; he will be remembered as one of the greatest creators in both French and global film culture. Delon's childhood was quite troubled. He joined the navy at a young age, but was court-martialed for theft. In the 1950s, he lived among prostitutes and petty criminals before the film industry discovered him, leading to his rise as one of the biggest film stars of the 1960s. His career flourished during the golden age of French cinema, with his artistry emerging alongside it. His early film roles brought him fame, and the most prestigious creators in European cinema sought his talents. Throughout his career, he appeared in no fewer than ninety films. Many retrospectives emphasize Delon's versatility and the richness of his character portrayals, where he convincingly played everything from a superior male chauvinist to a tender lover, an adventurer, a broken man, or a ruthless killer. He invested a great deal of work into transforming from an actor into an artist, a responsibility that required him to represent all male archetypes in a single series of films, as noted by The Hollywood Reporter following Delon's death. Despite the utmost respect expressed, the leading American film journal also pointed out that Delon was never able to achieve success in the United States, having made only six films there. Moreover, the European film elite did not overly recognize his work either. He won the French César Award only once, received an Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1995, and was honored with a Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2019 for his lifetime achievement. Delon's career was also marked by scandals: he was jailed for illegal possession of a firearm, accused of mafia connections, and was at the center of a dark political crime surrounding the mysterious death of his bodyguard in the late 1960s. His private life also often made headlines. For many years, Delon lived in seclusion on his country estate in Douchy, 150 kilometers from Paris, where the final period of his life was overshadowed by family disputes. His children were engaged in bitter conflicts over their father's care as his health rapidly declined following multiple strokes. In the last fifteen years of his life, Alain Delon became embittered. In one of his final statements, he expressed: "Life no longer holds much for me. I have experienced everything, I have seen everything. I hate this era; it makes me sick... Everything is false; only money matters. There is no more respect, nor honor in one's word. All day long, they talk about crimes. I will not feel regret when it is time for me to leave this world." Despite all of this, Alain Delon left behind a body of work at 88 years old that will immortalize him, making him a significant monument not only in French culture but also in the global film industry, as the French president recently described him. At the invitation of Sándor Friderikusz, Alain Delon first came to Budapest in 1993, together with his co-star in several films, Claudia Cardinale, for a special pre-Christmas event of the Friderikusz Show.
