Part three uses current singers. Lawrence Brownlee, Juan Diego Florez, Joseph Calleja, Rockwell Blake, Cecilia. Bartoli. Continued.. This analysis has nothing to do with a persons appreciation of a singer,it is an objective analysis of a vocal function. 1) Tremolo vibrato - is a fast and sometimes irregular action of the vocal mechanism, it does not have enough or any fluctuation in pitch. It is entirely a reflexive action due to tension or a wrong connection in the brain signaling of the muscles of the larynx. George Bernard Shaw said of De Lucia in June 1892. after seeing his L'amico Fritz, he stated that: "Signor De Lucia succeeds Valero ... as artificial tenor in ordinary to the establishment. His thin strident forte is in tune and does not tremble beyond endurance; and his mezza voce, though monotonous and inexpressive, is pretty as prettiness goes in the artificial school." The early critics and writers on the voice, used the term 'artificial singer' to define a certain voice type. These singers was generally regarded as a second or third class singer.Usually the typical quality of these singers was a voice marred by a tremolous action of the vocal cords. This was also known by the Italians as 'voce Caprino' because the sound resembled the bleat of a goat. All caprino singers seem to have a uniform trait, this is a nasal quality, or at minimum an overly masky production.(vocal placement in the mask) A nasal voice or even a voice forced into the mask has a destabilising effect on the muscular function of the vocal mechanism. (Due to little space, one author will be quoted only) Cornelius Reid, "The Free Voice, A Guide to Natural Singing" 1971,pg 183. "The tremolo, then,is the result of tenseness brought on by an improper muscular coordination.Muscles that should be relaxed during phonation become active, while those that should be active remain passive. This absence of stability between antagonistic groups of laryngeal muscles is responsible for many of the difficulties encountered with resonance in singing. The throat, instead of being free and pliable, becomes stiff and awkward.Tension is unrelieved." Reid goes on to say this tension can spread to other parts including, the tongue and jaw. Another point that Reid makes is that intonation is affected by the tremolo. This is so primarily because the vocal movement of a tremolo is too fast, and the fluctuation in the pitch is missing or too minimal. The vibrato is a normal and healthy action of the vocal mechanism, the tremolo, wobble, inverted vibrato are vocal faults that interfere with the correct vocal function. See parts one and two of others singers making the same sort of tremulous action. Future videos will be posted, on the vibrato, wobble and inverted vibrato.
