How fit would you have to be to be a Roman legionary? The Roman legionary was a soldier, but also an endurance athlete. Every man carried around 30kg of gear, marched up to 30km a day, and still had to be ready to fight when they arrived. Their training was relentless. You had to dig ditches, build camps, spar with heavy wooden weapons, and haul loads until it became second nature. To put it in perspective, the average recruit today would need marathon-runner stamina, the strength of a modern infantryman, and the resilience of a seasoned labourer just to make the cut. A legionary wasn’t just fit by modern standards. He was built to endure every hardship. Further reading: Adrian Goldsworthy, The Complete Roman Army Ross Cowan, Roman Legionary: 58 BC–AD 69
