At the heart of the city of Nantes, on an island formed by the Loire River, strange machines come to life.The Machines de l’île site is made up of three main attractions: the Gallery of Machines, the Great Elephant, and the Marine Worlds Carousel. The Gallery of Machines is a large exhibition space showing a mechanical bestiary. The machinists from the company La Machine operate and present surprising hybrid creatures mixing animal forms with mechanical engineering.Many of these machines were imagined by François Delaroziere, Pierre Orefice, and their company: the chameleon, the walking caterpillar, hummingbirds, the heron… and many more. The Great Elephant is a monumental machine, standing about 12 meters tall and weighing nearly 48 tons of wood and steel. Capable of carrying around fifty passengers, it takes visitors on short rides across the site. The Marine Worlds Carousel is a huge merry-go-round nearly 25 meters high, spread over three levels, illustrating marine life at different depths. A true mechanical aquarium, it brings imaginary creatures to life, from the surface of the sea down to the abyss. The entire site is located on the former shipyards, on the western end of the island. It stands as a remarkable example of the cultural and urban redevelopment of a former industrial area.
