As the pandemic continues to expand, the economic and societal impact of measures aimed at suppressing it are increasingly felt. Much hope has, however, been pinned on the prospect of vaccines to overcome the crisis. This has led to unprecedented investments in vaccine research with large global trials of several candidates nearing completion. Though the prospect of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines draws nearer, it may not be the panacea many expect.
