As the pandemic continues to expand, the economic and societal impact of measures aimed at suppressing it are increasingly felt. Much hope has, however, been pinned on the prospect of vaccines to overcome the crisis. This has led to unprecedented investments in vaccine research with large global trials of several candidates nearing completion. Though the prospect of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines draws nearer, it may not be the panacea many expect. What role are vaccines expected to play in controlling the virus and what are their limitations? What issues exist around equitable access to vaccines? To what extent can the COVAX facility, a global risk-sharing mechanism for pooled procurement and equitable distribution of eventual COVID-19 vaccines co-led by the WHO, GAVI and CEPI, be impactful? And how does it play in with other vaccine efforts?
