We had lunch or late breakfast at Master Congee today, and I have to admit that the establishment was greatly exaggerated and overhyped on several YouTube channels. We place an order for some Chinese donuts, a pan-fried soy sauce noodle, a couple of congee, and one of the glutinous rice wraps. The noodles were served immediately after we made the order, indicating that they were already pre-cooked and were simply waiting to be plated and served. The noodles were also noticeably cold when they were served. I gave it a go. There was no flavour and the noodles were tough. Next was the pork inert congee. The inerts had no weird tastes or scents and were tasty. But the texture and consistency of the congee were excessively thick. Congee can only be made smoother by boiling it and heating it for a longer period of time, which is what I preferred. Then came the Chinese donut, which had a crispy exterior and an extremely dense and weighty centre. I like Chinese donuts with a lighter, airier inside and a crispier outside, so I didn't really appreciate this one as much. Next was the wrap made of sticky rice. Smothered in a flavorful soy sauce, the sticky rice was served hot. My daughter and I both loved how soft and chewy the glutinous rice was. Finally, I had the freshly sliced fish congee. The fish slices were quite thick, but they were also rather difficult to chew due to the numerous bones. You really need to be careful when eating because it's easy to choke on a fish bone. The fish slice congee has a lot of bone in it, which makes it difficult to appreciate the dish—congee is something you usually slurp up—so I would not suggest ordering it. The food at this place was average, therefore I wouldn't recommend it. One of the best that I really enjoy is at Trusty Congee King, where the Chinese donut is made to order and is fried when you order, so it does take a little longer to wait, but it's always fresh, and that's what you want. The Chinese donut is also a true testament to a good congee house. I hope you appreciate my video and have a happy eating.
