On March 23, 2023, Trooper Chastain initiated a traffic stop on a Ford Taurus in Union, Missouri. The driver exited but attempted to reenter the vehicle. During the struggle, the driver struck an officer, started the vehicle, and fled. A pursuit followed through local streets, onto MO-47, and westbound on I-44 at speeds over 100 mph. Tire deflation devices were deployed, two tires were successfully deflated, and the vehicle ultimately left the roadway at an exit ramp. The driver and passenger fled on foot; the driver was captured after a foot pursuit, became unresponsive, and was transported to a hospital for evaluation. The driver initially provided multiple fake IDs and admitted to using multiple substances. Sequence of Events Traffic stop initiated for registration/seatbelt issues on East Main near MO‑47. Driver exits, attempts to enter gas station, then tries to reenter vehicle; resists officers. Physical struggle leads to driver starting vehicle and fleeing while an officer was in contact. Pursuit continued through Union onto US‑50, then southbound on MO‑47; driver exceeded 100 mph on I‑44. Tire deflation device used successfully; vehicle continued on two flat tires and crashed off the right side of an exit ramp. Driver and passenger fled on foot; driver apprehended after foot pursuit, became unresponsive, then transported for medical care. Charges Felony: Second degree assault on a special victim (struck an officer). Felony: Resisting or interfering with arrest for a felony. Felony: Possession of a controlled substance (non‑marijuana). Misdemeanor and traffic counts including DWI drug intoxication, careless driving, passing on the right, failure to drive on right half of roadway, seatbelt violation, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
